AUTUMN TRAVEL TRENDS

AS we’re getting closer to the what is autumn for the northern hemisphere, we wanted to look at where people are planning to spend their last days of summer and early autumn.

A report from Sojern on Global Travel Insights reveals that the top 5 destinations people in Europe have searched for are London, Barcelona, Paris, Palma de Mallorca and Amsterdam for short-haul and New York, Bangkok, Istanbul and Denpasar for long-haul, both for travel in September.

Spain is the primarily destination when it comes to beach destinations for September with Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Ibiza all in the top 5 with one exception, Faro, in Portugal, in the fifth place. Portugal appears to be a rising destination – it’s both in the top 10 list of searched and booked destination globally for Q2 2017, and one of the top rising destinations for hotels.

The top 5 metropolitan destinations include New York, London and Paris – no surprise here – and perhaps more unexpectedly Amsterdam and Bangkok in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The top 5 sightseeing and recreational destinations combine the previous results with Barcelona, London, Paris and Amsterdam on the list again, and the appearance of Rome in fourth place.

With so many great cities to explore just a stone throw away, DMC’s and local tourist boards need to ensure they are always top of mind, now more than ever.
